Members of the Organised Labour, under the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), picketed the head office of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Monday morning.

The unions protested against the recent increase in electricity tariff approved by the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

Hundreds of workers gathered at the Kano State Distribution Company (KEDCO) headquarters around 7 am with placards that read “Stop Suffoating Us”, “Cut Down the Reckless Cost Of Governance”, and “The Poor Can No Longer Breathe.”

The TUC chairperson, Comrade Mubarak Buba Yarima complained that the federal government was suffocating Nigerians with its policies.

He dismissed the NERC’s stance that the increase was for power company customers who get more than 20 hours of electricity daily.

“No community consumes 20 hours of electricity,” said Comrade Yarima.

“The hike tariff will increase the hardship experienced in the country,” he continued.

The union leader demanded the urgent reversal of the tariff hike, stressing that the union would not leave the NERC and Kano Disco offices until that happens.
