The Department of State Services (DSS) has released Adejuwon Soyinka, the West Africa editor of The Conversation Africa.

On Sunday morning, the BBC former Pidgin Service editor was taken into custody by the secret police at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya initially stated that he was unaware of the journalist's arrest, but subsequently acknowledged the detention.

He said another "another agency" requested his arrest.

Soyinka was released later in the day after the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria, a global network of editors, media executives, and communication specialists intervened.
