A chemical explosion has rocked the Onitsha Chemical Market, close to Ogbogwu drug market in Anambra State, leaving no fewer than four persons dead and shops razed by fire.

A witness said the raging fire started at about 12:25 pm Tuesday at a storey building in the market.

A trader in the market, Nweke Uchenna said he heard a loud noise like a bomb blast and saw thick smoke from some shops on the top floor of the building as everyone ran for safety.

The financial secretary of Head Bridge Market, Nobert Okoli, confirmed the deaths of four persons and said the market has been closed due to the fire.

He sympathized with shop owners who lost said goods and the families of those who lost their lives in the incident.

Meanwhile, the Anambra State Fire Chief, Martin Agbili, has been contained.
