One of the presidential frontrunners in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi has resigned from the party.

Mr. Obi left the party on Friday, 20 May, but notified the National Chairman of the PDP in a letter dated Tuesday, 24 May.

“I am writing to intimate you of my resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which was conveyed to the Chairman of Agulu Ward 2, Anaocha LGA Anambra, effective Friday 20 May 2022.

“Consequently, I am by this letter informing you of my withdrawal from the PDP Presidential Primaries,” he wrote.

“It has been a great honour to contribute to nation-building efforts through our party. Unfortunately, recent developments within our party make it practically impossible to continue participating and making such constructive contributions,” he continued.

Mr. Obi did not state what the “recent developments” are, but there have been calls from his supporters to leave the PDP.

A supporter who wishes to be anonymous said there has been a unanimous decision by a group of close supporters that the former Governor of Anambra State run for the presidency on another party.

The supporters believe there is a gang up in the PDP against Mr. Obi whose popularity has soared since he declared for the presidency.

He has topped every online poll put out with his name on it, asking people to vote for their presidential aspirant of choice.

With his resignation from the PDP, Mr. Obi’s supporters are now pushing him to join another party and run for president in 2023.

The resignation letter from the former Governor did not state his next move but hinted at running for office on another platform.

“Our national challenges are deep-seated and require that we each make profound sacrifices towards rescuing our country.

“My commitment to rescuing Nigeria remains firm, even if the route differs,” Mr. Obi wrote.
