The debate over the zoning of the presidency ahead of the 2023 General Election has been put to rest with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) throwing its primary open.

The decision was taken at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the main opposition party in Abuja Wednesday night.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Debo Ologunagba read a communique at the end of the meeting which stated that the NEC “aligned with the recommendation of the PDP National Zoning Committee that the Presidential Election should now be left open.”

However, the communique noted that “the party should also work towards consensus candidate where possible."

This means that all 15 presidential aspirants cleared by the party’s screening committee have an equal shot at the presidency.

One of them would emerge as the PDP’s presidential candidate at the Special National Convention that will take place from Saturday 28 May to Sunday 29 May in Abuja

The National Convention Organising Committee will be chaired by former President of the Senate, David Mark.

The Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi will serve as the Deputy Chairman and the former Governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shema as the Secretary.
