A new poll conducted by NOI Polls and sponsored by ANAP Foundation shows the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, is the preferred choice of Nigerians ahead of the 2023 General Election.
Obi had a favorable rating of 23 percent, ahead of 13 percent for Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, 10 percent for Abubakar Atiku of the People’s Democratic Party, and two percent for Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party.
The result isn’t different from an earlier poll conducted in September by ANAP/NOI.
That poll placed Obi as the leading candidate with 21 percent of the votes, with Tinubu and Atiku getting 13 percent each, and Kwankwaso coming fourth with three percent.
The president of ANAP Foundation, Atedo Peterside, says the polling team expanded the sample size in the new poll from the 1,000 people surveyed in the first poll to 3,000.
Twenty-nine percent of the respondents in the latest poll were undecided while another 23 percent refused to take part.
As a result, ANAP says the polls are inconclusive because the combination of undecided voters and those who refused to disclose their preferences is enough to change the poll outcome.
Results from Geopolitical Zones
A breakdown of the poll shows that Obi got his highest percentage of votes from the South East and the South-South regions of Nigeria.
He polled 50 percent in the South East where he comes from and 46 percent in the South-South.
Tinubu and Atiku each got one percent of the vote in the South East, while Kwankwaso got zero percent.
Twenty-five percent of the respondents in the zone were undecided and 23 percent refused to take part.
Obi led the candidates in the South-South with 46 percent, ahead of Tinubu’s nine percent, Atiku’s three percent, and Kwankwaso’s one percent.
Twenty-six percent of the respondents in the zone were undecided and 15 percent refused to take part.
Obi also led the pack in the North Central, with 24 percent of the respondents saying they would vote for him.
Tinubu polled nine percent, Atiku got eight percent, and Kwankwaso managed one percent.
Thirty-five percent of the respondents in the zone were undecided and 23 percent refused to take part.
Tinubu was seven percentage points ahead of Obi in the South West where he comes from, polling 22 percent to Obi’s 15 percent.
Atiku and Kwankwaso got four percent and one percent respectively.
Twenty percent of the respondents in the zone were undecided and 38 percent refused to take part.
Atiku led in his North East base with 23 percent, Tinubu came second with 15 percent, nearly double Obi’s eight percent, while Kwankwaso got two percent.
Thirty-eight percent of the respondents in the zone were undecided and 14 percent refused to take part.
The closest result was from Kwankwaso’s North West.
Atiku’s 17 percent gave him an edge over Tinubu who got 15 percent of the vote. Obi polled 11 percent and Kwankwaso trailed with six percent.
Thirty-two percent of the respondents in the zone were undecided and 19 percent refused to take part.
Methodology
ANAP/NOI conducted the poll by asking respondents whom they would vote for as the president of Nigeria if the election was conducted today.
The organizations conducted the poll by calling the respondents’ mobile phones.
ANAP and NOI plan to carry out another poll in January, a month before the election.
