The United States Government has returned $954,000 that was stolen by the former Governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha.

US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard, made the announcement during a press briefing held on Thursday in Abuja.

She noted that the former governor's official salary during his tenure as a public servant from 1999 to his impeachment in 2005 did not match the recovered amount, indicating that he had "accumulated millions of dollars through abuse of office and money laundering."

It is worth noting that Alamieyeseigha passed away in October 2015 at the age of 62, and therefore, is unable to face prosecution for his actions.

In response to the recovery of the stolen funds, President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that the recovered sum be utilized in developing the healthcare sector of Bayelsa.
