The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has announced the temporary closure of the Third Mainland Bridge to begin repairs on deteriorating sections.
The maintenance will be carried out in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works, necessitating the closure of the bridge for two consecutive Sundays, 17 and 24 September, between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Sunday.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Abdulhafiz Toriola, confirmed the planned rehabilitation.
Toriola explained that the repair work would be conducted in two phases, with the initial phase focusing on the most critical sections of the bridge, particularly the Iyana-Oworonsoki inward Adeniji Adele/Lagos Island direction.
An advisory route has been issued to ensure the smooth flow of traffic during this period.
Traffic from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the Alapere/Ogudu axis, heading towards Lagos Island, will be rerouted to the Gbagada-Oshodi Expressway, leading to Ikorodu Road/Funsho Williams Avenue, allowing access to Eko Bridge and Lagos Island.
Motorists traveling from Lagos Mainland via Herbert Macaulay Road (Adekunle axis) towards Lagos Island via the Third Mainland Bridge will be directed to use Murtala Muhammed Way and Carter Bridge to reach Lagos Island.
Toriola urged motorists to be patient and follow safety precautions during the repair work. Multiple traffic agencies, including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police, and other traffic personnel, will be deployed to manage traffic effectively.
He assured the public that LASTMA and other agencies would work together to minimize disruptions and enhance traffic flow throughout the repair exercise, despite potential traffic inconveniences on alternative routes.
