Minister of Sports, John Enoh has called on the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to provide a detailed technical report on the nation's national men's football team, the Super Eagles in the wake of their performances on Friday and Monday during the 2026 World Cup qualifying series this international window.
Finidi George and his team have come under heavy flak after a 1-1 draw against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in Uyo on Friday, and a 2-1 loss to Benin Republic on Monday in Cote d'Ivoire.
The results left the AFCON 2024 runner-up not only winless in their group, but also leaves them lying fifth in the six-man group with three points after four rounds of matches.
According to the minister in a statement from his office, the considerable amount of support received by the NFF from the government makes for more dissatisfaction.
“The recent results are unacceptable. Despite the immense support from President Tinubu and the high expectations of Nigerian football fans, the Super Eagles have underperformed."
Senator Enoh added that the country's football fans also deserve answerability from the football federation.
“The NFF must provide a comprehensive technical report explaining the reasons behind this poor showing and give cause why there mustn’t be consequences for the disappointment caused both to the Government and the generality of Nigerians.
“Our supporters are passionate and devoted. They deserve an explanation for why our national team has not been performing to the expected standards since after the last AFCON."
