The Nigerian Army says the soldier who killed a 16-year-old protester in Zaria has been arrested.

The army spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, said on Wednesday that soldiers were enforcing the 24-hour curfew imposed on Kaduna and Zaria cities in response to reports of violence during the nationwide protest.

He added that thugs attacked soldiers enforcing the curfew in the Samaru neighborhood of Zaria.

Nwachukwu stated that people burned tires and hurled stones at security personnel.

According to the army spokesperson, the arrested soldier intended to disperse the protesters by firing a warning shot, leading to the death of a 16-year-old boy, identified as Ismail Mohammed.

The soldier is undergoing interrogation.
