The House of Representatives has called on the federal government to suspend the implementation of the Samoa Agreement.

This was after a motion sponsored by 88 of its members on the grounds of controversial clauses in the agreement.

Calling the attention of the government on Tuesday to the clause that underlines gender equality, Representative Aliyu Madaki noted it could be a stratagem that degrades the morals of the country.

Recall that Nigeria signed the Samoa Agreement with the European Union on June 28 - a move that led to widespread criticisms from the citizens with concerns regarding the acceptance of LGBT and same-sex marriage rights.

The Samoa Agreement is also seen by many as a contrary stand to the anti-same-sex and gay relationships law signed by former president, Goodluck Jonathan in 2014.

However, Atiku Bagudu, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning had on Saturday at a press conference restated that Nigeria would not enter into an agreement directly opposed to the constitution, religious and cultural
taste of the Nigerian people.

According to him, Nigeria entered the agreement to boost food security and inclusive economic development.
