The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has commenced a nationwide seven-day warning strike, effective from midnight on Monday, August 26, 2024.

The NARD president, Dr. Dele Abdullahi, announced the strike decision after a virtual Emergency National Executive Council meeting on Sunday, August 25, 2024.

The strike, which would be total, as there would be no emergency care., is in protest of the prolonged kidnapping of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna.

Dr. Popoola, who was abducted nearly eight months ago alongside her husband and nephew, remains in captivity along with her nephew, despite her husband's release in March.

This move follows recent protests by NARD members in tertiary hospitals nationwide, demanding Dr. Popoola's immediate release.

The strike is a call to action for the authorities to ensure the safe return of the kidnapped doctor and her nephew.
