The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is pushing for the police and civil defence to join the military in fighting Nigeria’s “war.”

Dumebi Kachikwu told participants at the opening of the 62nd edition of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Conference on Monday that Nigeria is a country at war.

“I have been to war-torn countries and Nigeria is the only country in the world where a nation is at war and her people don’t know they’re at war,” he said.

Mr. Kachikwu also advocated for the police and civil defence to join the military in the war.

“Our security infrastructure is overwhelmed and underfunded. We must immediately get the police and civil defence to join the military in this war,” he told the conference.

Nigeria is currently battling various security challenges in all regions of the country. There are terrorism and kidnappings carried out by Boko Haram and its splinter group in the North East, parts of the North West, and North Central; and recently in Ondo State in the South West.

Banditry is a big issue in the North West and the North Central, and there is the threat posed by the secessionist group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the South East.

Kidnapping takes place in all six of Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
