Aviation worker’s unions in Kano have suspended their two-day warning strike.

On Monday, the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) protested at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) over the failure of the Federal Government to implement their negotiated conditions of service, and their restructured minimum wage.

The action crippled the operations of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Nigeria Info FM, the national representative of NUATE in Kano, Comrade Akubo Benjamin said the strike was suspended following appeals from well-meaning Nigerians over the inconveniences it caused.

But Comrade Akubo expressed dismay over the Federal government's nonchalant attitude to addressing the demands of the unions.

"The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, as well as the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA was hundred percent grounded. So, we suspended the strike because of the innocent air travelers.

“One of our concerns right now is even though we have suspended the strike, the government is yet to reach out to us," he lamented.

Union Leader Threatens Indefinite Strike

Also speaking, the chairman of AUPCTRE, Comrade Abdullahi Ibrahim threatened that the union will embark on an indefinite strike by the end of May if the Federal Government fails to meet their demands.

"The first one we did was just a warning strike, and they felt the impact.

“We have given the government the grace of this month, if they fail to meet our demands, we will shut down the airport," he said.
