The lawyers of BRT driver Andrew Nice tried to adjourn his ongoing trial for a fourth time on Thursday.
At the resumption of his case at the Lagos High Court sitting in Tafawa Balewa Square, a representative of the lead defense counsel, Omotubura Abayomi applied for an adjournment due to the inability of the lead counsel to be in court.
The prosecution team led by the Lagos State Attorney General, Moyosore Onigbanjo, objected and asked the court to strike out the application.
He argued that the representing counsel should be able to handle the case since he had been nominated to hold a brief for the lead counsel.
Giving her verdict, Justice Serifat Sonaike said the court had suffered too many setbacks on the case and would not grant an adjournment in the interest of justice.
Andrew Nice’s murder trial had been stalled three times before, following the absence of his lawyer in court.
Following the judge’s procurement, two witnesses, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Isibor Amos, and a social worker from the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, Segun Agbi testified and were cross-examined before the court.
Andrew Nice Ominicoron, Lagos BRT driver, is standing trial on a five-count charge including the murder of his passenger, 22-year-old Oluwabamise Ayonwola, rape, and sexual assault of two other women.
The court adjourned until 7 July for the continuation of the trial.
