The United Nations' International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Friday ordered Israel to take all measures within its power to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza.

In its interim order on Friday, the court also ordered Israel to improve the humanitarian situation in the besieged enclave.

The court also ruled that it has jurisdiction to consider the genocide case brought by South Africa against Israel, adding that it would not throw out the genocide case as Israel requested.

President of the ICJ, Joan E. DonoghueThe ICJ noted Palestinians are protected under the Genocide Convention and it recognises the right of Palestinians in Gaza to be protected from acts of genocide.

Contrary to expectations, the ICJ did not order an immediate cease-fire.

South Africa had on December 29, filed a lawsuit with the ICJ requesting an injunction against Israel because Israel's attacks on Gaza violates the Genocide Convention.

In its request, South Africa called on Israel to immediately stop its offensive on Gaza, which has killed or destroyed over 26,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities.

Furthermore, it requested that an injunction be granted due to the urgency of the situation.
