The federal government has ordered vice-chancellors to re-open universities and allow students to resume lectures.

This is according to The Punch newspaper which says it got an exclusive report signed by the Director of Finance and Accounts of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Sam Onazi.

The letter was addressed to all vice-chancellors; pro-chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities, according to the Punch report.

“Ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures; Restore the daily activities and routines of the various University campuses, the letter partly read.

It is coming less than a week after the National Industrial Court of Nigeria ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its nationwide strike.

ASUU started the industrial action on 14 February to demand for improved funding for universities, a review of salaries for lecturers, and a change in the automated system used in paying the lecturers.

The government challenged the strike in court, praying the judiciary to grant an interlocutory injunction restraining ASUU from continuing with it pending the determination of a substantive suit.

The trial judge, Justice Hamman granted the government’s request.

ASUU had since filed an appeal to challenge the order.
