The strike by Nigerian aviation workers enters its second day on Tuesday, with unions vowing to shut down all the airports in the country.
On Monday, the workers blocked all roads leading to the domestic and international wings of the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos.
But the General Secretary of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical, and Recreational Services Employees, Sikiru Waheed, said the second day of the strike will be more effective.
“Day two of the strike would be more effective than what you are seeing here now because we only used today as a warning to people that are traveling,” he told journalists on Monday.
“People who need to travel tomorrow (Tuesday) should not book a flight for tomorrow because it is going to be a total shutdown,” he added.
“It is not going to be like today. By 5:00 am we will be here to shut down everywhere.
“We are appealing to all those that want to travel that they should shelve their journey for tomorrow because it may be disrupted. It is a warning for everyone in the public.”
Waheed’s warning is coming on the same day the federal government pleaded with the workers to suspend the strike.
The Ministry of Aviation said the strike was unnecessary and asked the workers to “join hands with management to make the aviation industry a hub in Africa.”
The workers are unhappy with several issues: they want the government to suspend its airport concession plan, improve working conditions, and increase salaries.
