Devastating floods have submerged thousands of houses and destroyed properties in Odekpe community in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Some parts of the state witnessed heavy flooding in recent weeks, leaving thousands displaced in areas like Ayamelum, Ogbaru, Anambra East, Anambra West, and Ihiala.

Many residents were trapped in their homes and those who managed to come out were seen paddling canoes, which has become the only means of transportation in the communities.

The residents are counting their losses, including an aged homeowner at Iyiowa Odekpe in Ogbaru who is now displaced.

She said she lost everything to the flood.

Other residents said they can only estimate their losses when the flood waters recede.

Many have lost their means of livelihood in addition to the loss of their homes.

Traders and farmers in Ossomala town complained that buyers have stopped coming to their market due to the destruction of the roads leading to the town by the flood.

The flooding was caused by heavy rainfall and the opening of the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.

The water from the dam caused flooding in Anambra and Kogi States.
